Troyan Monastery of the Dormition

Troyan Monastery of the Dormition

Just 200 metres from TanGenta stands the Troyan Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God — the third-largest monastery in Bulgaria and the spiritual heart of the Troyan Balkan.

Founded at the end of the 16th century, the monastery took on its present form during the Bulgarian National Revival. Its greatest treasure is the miraculous icon of the Three-Handed Mother of God (Troeruchitsa), brought from Mount Athos. The walls of the main church were painted by one of the greatest Revival-era artists, Zahari Zograf, whose frescoes here are among the peaks of Bulgarian church art.

The monastery also played a role in Bulgarian history — a secret revolutionary committee founded by Vasil Levski operated within its walls. The courtyard, fountains and carved-wood galleries make a visit peaceful and inspiring in any season. You can walk there in just a few minutes.
